The Commission for Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities is the body charged with implementing Israel’s Equality Law and other relevant Laws, and acts to prevent discrimination and remove obstacles which impede the integration of people with disabilities into Israel society, as citizens bearing equal rights and obligations. In order to achieve these goals, the Commission promotes joint projects with relevant governmental, local, public, private, and not for profit groups in general, and with disabled persons' NGOs in particular.
Mr Ahiya Kamara was extremely impressed with AlManarah’s Multi-Services Centre, which includes a recording studio for producing audio books in Arabic; a Braille & audio library and computer room, which includes specialized computer technology for people with visual disabilities; and our new Educational Kitchen, which will be used to train people with visual disabilities to navigate the kitchen and make hot food and drinks, thus developing essential practical skills.
The Commissioner also met AlManarah’s staff members, who explained our projects including Fostering Social Awareness, which conducts workshops for school and university students; Empowerment and Developing Skills, which through group work provides a framework for mutual self-help, increases confidence and integration, and nurtures a cadre of blind leaders; Legal Advocacy, which works for equal rights for people with visual disabilities, particularly in the field of accessibility; and Phone Assistance & Personal Consultancy, which provides individual information and advice to people with visual disabilities and their parents.
Together we discussed the Commission’s readiness to cooperate with AlManarah, especially since Adv. Abbass Abbass’ appointment as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Commission, which will enable us to work together to address the needs of persons with disabilities in Israel.
