In Arabic, ALMANARAH means a lighthouse. Symbolically, this name was chosen to highlight our goal of leading blind Palestinian Arabs in Israel towards a bright future by providing them with the capacities to improve their situation and empowering them and the broader community. ALMANARAH was founded in May 2005 by a group of blind grassroots activists, led by lawyer Mr. Abbas Abbas. ALMANARAH operates to bring about a change through bottom-up action, by involving and integrating the energies of the existing social capital present within its members and supporters. ALMANARAH is the first Palestinian Arab organization of its kind to act as a catalyst of social change and a means of transforming the lives of the blind community in Israel.
